Why I do Heritage Paddle Designs

I believe that tools that surround us should be functional, beautiful and long lasting. Throughout history and around the world, tools of all kinds have been created with exquisite carved, painted and wood burned designs. These items were used and handed down through generations.

In 1935, Mat Bernard of Golden Lake First Nations gave my father the gift of a paddle with beautiful wood burned designs. The designs are as clear today as they were on the day that Mat made them. Dad traveled thousands of kilometers on wilderness rivers and lakes with that paddle. Indeed he used it until his 89th birthday. Now it takes me to quiet waterways. It is full of memories and a precious link to my father.

I am grateful for the heritage of artistic inspiration from Mat and for the love of wilderness from my father. Like Mat, my designs are etched into the paddle with a woodburning tool and they too will last at least a lifetime.

My art work is inspired by the flowing intertwining lines in nature and by traditions of the past. Each design is unique. No one else in the world has a paddle just like yours. It is a 'heritage' design because it represents something or someplace that is special to the recipient.

These paddles are meant to be used. They are especially fine for flat water paddling. Careful use, storage and maintenance will ensure that your paddle can be used for years to come. May it take you to serene lakes and misty mornings and serve as a reminder to step lightly on the earth.
